ILLUTRON serves as a maritime art laboratory and creative community in Copenhagen Harbour. Here, artists, craftspeople, researchers and volunteers come together to collaborate on experimental art, learning and cultural events. It is a base for emerging creative communities and an incubator for new artistic and technological practices. Many of the people who today contribute to Copenhagen’s cultural and innovation scene took some of their first steps here.
The barge’s unique character means that it is not just a setting for activities, but often becomes an active part of them. Therefore the public is not simply invited to observe, but to take part as active co-creators. Art, technology and craftsmanship meet in open-ended processes where curiosity and hands-on experimentation matter more than finished answers, and where ideas can quickly be turned into action.
Through the ongoing transformation project, Kulturskibet ILLUTRON, the barge is being secured for the future and developed into a year-round mobile cultural venue with improved facilities for artistic production, knowledge sharing, performing arts, public cultural events and STE(A)M education, combining science and technology with art.
ILLUTRON is in the middle of a major transformation. The first phase of the renovation has been completed, including extensive work on the hull and the architectural project has been developed together with Tegnestuen Vandkunsten. The ambition is to transform the barge into a year-round cultural venue with improved workshops and production facilities, artist residencies, STE(A)M education and more public cultural activities across Copenhagen Harbour.
The board's main priorities in the coming period include securing future operational support, progressing the ongoing building case with the City of Copenhagen, restarting major fundraising for the renovation, and continuing to develop the overall project, vision and renovation plan.
There is no single profile that fits ILLUTRON. We are interested in people with substantial professional experience, strong networks or proven accomplishments who also find an experimental and unconventional project like ILLUTRON interesting.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in:
Have strong professional experience, proven accomplishments and/or a relevant network
Have experience in law, business, construction, architecture, engineering or maritime projects
Have experience with fundraising or management of larger projects, especially within renovation, culture or the arts
Bring other relevant perspectives, for example from STEM education, social work or community development
Are curious and open-minded enough to find an experimental and unconventional organisation like ILLUTRON interesting
Preferably speak Danish, as much of our fundraising, building case and dialogue with the City of Copenhagen takes place in Danish
The ILLUTRON board is a mix of two representatives from the ILLUTRON crew and external board members bringing experience and perspectives from other professions and organisations.
