Data Visualization installation for the 4S / EASST joint conferences in Copenhagen October 2012.
Using water pumps, compressed air and 1000 meters of PVC tubing we designed a sculpture that simulates the flow of bike traffic through the streets and pathways of Copenhagen. Presenting the real data in an abstract form.

Playful interaction.
The demands for the work was: Interactive. Playful.
Should be something, that could be played with by children and adults.
(to see the final result: go to the showcase page)

We started from the concept of a Metro. A metro is pipes in the ground, where people are flowing around. Back and forward. Around and around. Every day.

<img src="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/map.png" width="670" height="438" width_o="725" height_o="475" src_o="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/map_o.png" data-mid="24576904" border="0" align="left"/>
First we just wanted to do the map of the metro on the wall, using clear plastic pipes.

<img src="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/metrowall-pipes.jpg" width="670" height="498" width_o="781" height_o="581" src_o="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/metrowall-pipes_o.jpg" data-mid="24576926" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/draft1_3.png" width="586" height="498" width_o="586" height_o="498" src_o="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/draft1_3_o.png" data-mid="24578423" border="0" align="left"/>
Then we looked closer at the map of the metro, brainstormed, and the monster arrived. The map of the metro looks very much like a monster.

<img src="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/IMG_7787.JPG" width="670" height="500" width_o="2048" height_o="1529" src_o="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/IMG_7787_o.JPG" data-mid="24578311" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/IMG_7792.JPG" width="670" height="500" width_o="2048" height_o="1529" src_o="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/IMG_7792_o.JPG" data-mid="24578327" border="0" align="left"/>
It became clear, that doing an exact replica of the Metro map would not be as interesting as doing a monster, that kind of look like the metro, if you know how it looks. Doing it a lot more subtle.

<img src="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/pump.png" width="670" height="235" width_o="670" height_o="235" src_o="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/pump_o.png" data-mid="24577307" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/top.png" width="670" height="235" width_o="670" height_o="235" src_o="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4618585/top_o.png" data-mid="24577451" border="0" align="left"/>
Above: the plastic pump we used for the "official opening" has been quickly replaced with a more sturdy one... :)

Is it a metro or is it a monster?
Pump the blood around and give life to the monster. When the fluid reaches the eyes, they light up.
The Metro Monster is decorating the wall of the Metro construction site at Skjolds Plads close to Osram Huset in Nørrebro.
Organized and financed by Haraldsgadekvarterets Områdeløft, Metroselskabet og 2200Kultur.

Nobody knows, but if you look at the map of the metro it is quite clear.
Many many years ago, a giant monster fell asleap on the site, where Copenhagen is today.
<img src="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4613386/_MG_8750.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="2000" height_o="1333" src_o="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4613386/_MG_8750_o.jpg" data-mid="24576228" border="0" align="left"/>
There is a giant monster hiding under Copenhagen, and the whole purpose of the metro is to dig it free.
If you look at the map, it becomes clear. The arms have been dug free, and now it is time for the body. <img src="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4613386/_MG_8756.jpg" width="670" height="718" width_o="2048" height_o="2196" src_o="http://payload115.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/4613386/_MG_8756_o.jpg" data-mid="24576296" border="0" align="left"/>

A playground in Odense is an interactive dreamspace. It is linked to similar places in Esbjerg and Vejle, and you create patterns of light and sound together with children and adults in the other cities. Medea’s Mads Hobye is one of the developers. Playspot is designed to be a dynamic and explorative play area across the three cities. The interactions at each site are shared with other cities, and this allows for interactions across cities via the system’s “built-in personality”.

You create patterns of light and sound together with children and adults in the other two cities. No single player has full control but will need to explore the many buttons and collaborate with the other players to understand and make sense of the game.

<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3856646/DSC_mads_hobye_1907.jpeg" width="670" height="446" width_o="1020" height_o="680" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3856646/DSC_mads_hobye_1907_o.jpeg" data-mid="20106110" border="0" align="left"/>

The system has multiple modes. Put simply they can be defined as the following:

Chaotic game: The system is quite neutral and serves primarily as a sampler or drum machine. Users can play themselves and create their own game with the sounds.

Wild game: The system makes only one repetition. If a person runs quickly over the buttons, the system activates the buttons that he has touched only once.

Duet playing: The users can create soundscapes or sound images that play until the activity drops to a level where the playground believes that everyone is gone. These loops have intervals at about 10-20 seconds. The playground has other hidden interaction opportunities that you can find by exploring the possibilities of each button.

jr. Lab with a collaboration of illutron has designed a floating sauna.

The floating sauna is unique for several reasons: it is transportable, and offers up to 12 bathers an original Finnish loyly with many additions to a typical sauna experience. Since the sauna is floating and has a motor, the bathers can choose whether they want to stay by the location or take a trip around the corner and enjoy the new view from the many windows of the sauna.

There is also a trap door on the floor. Open it, and spot lights will turn on and light the water underneath, projecting the reflection of the water stream to the ceiling. If the temperature is too hot, just dip yourself into the water.

<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3856571/05.jpeg" width="670" height="444" width_o="2000" height_o="1328" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3856571/05_o.jpeg" data-mid="20105628" border="0" align="left"/>

A closet for clothes is discreetly located behind the sauna.
The sauna is planned to be finished on the summer 2013. Now we are looking for a partner to fund the project.

The sauna will be placed at Teglholm, opposite Metropolis, where it can be sailed out when desired, and of course, loaned to the partner for private use.

When finished, the unique sauna will gain a lot of attention in Copenhagen. It will be open for public during the summer. On the winter it will win the hearts of winter bathers.
It’s a good opportunity for the partner to get positive publicity among the people living in Copenhagen – and furthermore the beautiful sauna will be noted on abroad as well.

The installation is in a room with only one entrance, as first impressions and POV is of the essence to the installation. Behind the screen a gigantic colorful pulsating spectacle is taking place. The curious visitor will attempt to explore this event. But when the visitor turns the corner, their presence is sensed and the spectacle stops, by switching off all LEDs. If the visitor wants to enjoy the light show he/she now has to adjust to the conditions, standing still long enough for the machines to get used to the visitors presence. By standing, waiting, for a moment, the machines will resume their light- party for the visitors to enjoy. The visitor will be able to join the party until another visitor arrives and triggers the motion sensors, turning the LEDs off again.

<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3856540/MachinesAreHavingFun_MadsHobye_IMG_2064.jpeg" width="670" height="502" width_o="1020" height_o="765" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3856540/MachinesAreHavingFun_MadsHobye_IMG_2064_o.jpeg" data-mid="20105422" border="0" align="left"/>

The installation calls for a dialogue between the visitors that aims at a consensus of presence with respect to the machines and the time they need, offering every visitor the possibility to enjoy the spectacle. All machines and technologies used in this installation are outdated and have been bought used or found in the scrap. The repurposing of technology, putting common electronic objects in new contexts, suggests that all machines are having crazy fun when we’re not looking.

When he came to us and asked if he could have a gas cannon mounted on his car we could not resist. The cannon is done by Nicolas Padfield as a part of his ongoing investigation into making portable flame effects.

We designed two identical boxes with a little lens that was a window into a virtual compass. The needle always points to the other box. Each box had a compartment which was locked with a combination lock. The combination was written on the other box. This meant that you would only be able to discover what was in the boxes by searching for its twin.

As an initial experiment the two boxes were placed at two different locations in a park. Two strangers would use the compasses to solve the task of finding each other. After many confusing moments the two participants ended up meeting on a bridge. They managed to open them and inside they found a golden beer and two glasses. They represented the reward and the opportunity of celebration for solving the task.

This project was a part of a larger exploration with Xperia Studio. We want to convey the message to the world that technology should be designed to be remixed, hacked and customized by its users. The process was filmed, and will be published as part of a larger promotion about the phones.

Once again - partnering with Kulturhavn we bring you KulturSYDhavn!

KulturSYDhavn (August 3 – 5)

KulturSYDhavn is our annual festival, in collaboration with Kulturhavn and other partners including the Børnekulturstedet Karens Minde, Kbh Projekthus, AFUK, Kongens Enghave Lokalhistorisk, and others. Experience many installations, join in a treasure hunt for the entire family, and explore the ship illutron!

Find the full brochure here

We have many activities throughout the summer including:

Sinking Ship Kraka: An old wooden boat. Sunken on the bottom of the harbour. Open the valves, let in the air, and bring it back to the surface – For a little while. Until it slowly sinks again.
Underwater ROV: A little robot (Remote Operated Vehicle) with incredible underwater vision is released into the harbour, to explore the depths below.
Create your city – new harbour life: In collaboration with Københavns Kommune, we experiment with making the water of the Copenhagen Harbour more accessible and usable to the public.
Ønskekanal – The wish canal: a community event held in Sluseholmen. An all day BBQand family gathering will lead up to a beautiful evening – where you assemble small electronics which will glow, casting your wish for the harbour into the canals of Sluseholmen.
Giant CNC: illutron is building a huge machine which can cut and mill wood and metal.
Visit it onboard illutron!

Electrolumen: The lamp post on our upper deck is for you to play with – explore electricity and interactivity in this intriguing installation.

Hydrophonic Soundscapes: A beautiful project exploring sounds and lights in the harbour.
Kunstkopf: A giant underwater head which can hear underwater and share the sounds with you.
Self-Guided Tours: illutron offers you the chance to take a self-guided tour of our ship. * You can read about each project and the history of the ship with the signs we’ve provided.
Enjoy our free wifi and help yourself to a coffee in our cafe!

KulturSYDhavn 2012

KulturSYDhavn is illutron’s annual festival, in collaboration with Kulturhavn and other partners including the Børnekulturstedet Karens Minde, Smutti: The Mobile Fab Lab from IdemoLab, Delta, Kbh Projekthus, AFUK, Kongens Enghave Lokalhistorisk, and others. Experience many installations, join in activities for the entire family, and explore the ship illutron!

It takes place this weekend – August 3 – 5 2012. We hope you can join us!

Hydrophonic Soundscapes
<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/7.jpeg" width="560" height="373" width_o="560" height_o="373" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/7_o.jpeg" data-mid="20097334" border="0" align="left"/>

Hydrophonic Soundscapes was built for Helsinki Festival on August 2011. The installation transformed a pool in the middle of Helsinki centre into an interactive sound and light installation.

Several hydrophones captured all the sounds the audience made; for example splashing hands or throwing stones into the water. Some found it interesting to use a hose to blow air into the water, some to use the hose as a whip spanking the water. All the sounds the hydrophones captured were send to a delay effect and further to the speakers which were placed on the sides of the pool.

The installation, renewed and re-imagined will be running for KulturSYDhavn 2012 – Created by: Simo Ekholm, Halfdan Hauch Jensen, Harald M. Viuff, Jiazi Liu, Sally Ingvorsen and Johan Bichel Lindegaard.

The Underwater ROV
<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/6.jpeg" width="560" height="420" width_o="560" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/6_o.jpeg" data-mid="20097329" border="0" align="left"/>

Dzl’s underwater remote operated vehicle will patrol the waters of the harbor – and show via a TV, all the wonders of the underwater world. You can guide the ROV and see the world below using a joystick. To read all about the project, visit his blog here: http://dzlsevilgeniuslair.blogspot.dk/search/label/ROV

The Sinking Ship
<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/3.jpeg" width="560" height="840" width_o="560" height_o="840" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/3_o.jpeg" data-mid="20097318" border="0" align="left"/>

Christian Liljedahl works on his summer project – the Sinking Ship “An old wooden boat. Sunken on the bottom of the harbour. Open the valves, let in the air, and bring it back to the surface – For a little while. Until it slowly sinks again…” ask him about his project and visit the ship that will soon be sunk…

Self Guided Tours
<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/4.jpeg" width="559" height="373" width_o="559" height_o="373" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/4_o.jpeg" data-mid="20097319" border="0" align="left"/>

Thanks to the brilliant work of our newest illutron member, Giacomo, we now have the ability to offer self-guided tours. Giacomo, working with Christian and Dzl, has crafted signs for every installation onboard illutron and even for the rooms we use on the ship. Now you can explore the barge and learn about the history of each place onboard.

Playing with lights, underwater
<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/2.jpeg" width="559" height="373" width_o="559" height_o="373" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/2_o.jpeg" data-mid="20097316" border="0" align="left"/>

Schack Lindemann and Dzl will play with lightbulbs underwater, exploring how to technically achieve light under water and exploring the effects the light has and how it appears underwater.

Guests from Iceland and Sweden
Our friends Nils Wiberg and Anders Mellbratt hailing from Iceland and Sweden have decided to join us once again in a weekend of creative madness. They will be doing several installations throughout the weekend exploring interaction and relationships with the world and people’s perception of it. One such installation is called Longitudinal Objects where they explore what it is that computers cannot see – but that we can. Look around illutron to see the intriguing installations they have set up and check them out online:
anders.mellbratt.se
and
http://gagarin.is/

Nils explains the project further:
In an era when computers can see everything what will interest them?

What intrigues us and what our art and philosophy indulges in, are concepts we cannot quite fathom, like time, space and infinity; Conversely, what would intrigue machines would be what they cannot perceive. In lieu of this, these longitudinal objects are created, with a language familiar to machines but still nor perceivable to them. By using the machines’ ways of seeing, and the machines’ ways of communicating in physical space, we want to create a theatre of confused logic, as the bits jump over the physical divide.

Smutti: The Mobile Fab Lab
<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/9.jpeg" width="559" height="395" width_o="559" height_o="395" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/9_o.jpeg" data-mid="20097337" border="0" align="left"/>

In collaboration with GeekPhysical and illutron, IdemoLab, a part of Delta’s Incubation Unit, presents “Smutti: The Mobile Fab Lab”. Smutti is a small, charming camper wagon full of equipment to help your ideas meet the real world.

A Fab Lab is a place that you can brainstorm, conceptualize, design, sketch and prototype your ideas quickly and then test them in the real world. Fab Labs are popping up all over the world as a response to the need for a personal fabrication factory where people can take their ideas and develop them into products, test, and redesign quickly and with no previous experience in product design.

Learn more here: idemolab.dk

So…please join us! This weekend Aug. 3-5. Also, fire workshops, for kids of course.

<img src="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/5.jpeg" width="559" height="373" width_o="559" height_o="373" src_o="http://payload77.cargocollective.com/1/7/254186/3854989/5_o.jpeg" data-mid="20097324" border="0" align="left"/>

We’ll be doing all of this and much more so please come and join us this weekend. Installations will be running from 1200 – 2000 each day and you’re welcome to ask us questions and play with everything!

We’ll also be doing some fire workshops for children where we explore how to put out a fire, how to start a fire, how to make fire from electricity and of course, constructing a fire sculpture out of sparklers.

Times of Fire Workshop:
Friday 1630 – 1730
Saturday 1300 – 1400
Saturday 1630 – 1730
Sunday 1300 – 1400
Sunday 1630 – 1730

Looking forward to see you this weekend!

Touché is a new sensing technology that can not only detect a touch event, but simultaneously recognize complex configurations of the human hands and body during touch interaction. Developed by Disney Research Lab, Touché significantly enhances touch interaction in a broad range of applications, from enhancing conventional touchscreens to designing interaction scenarios for unique use contexts and materials. For example, you can add complex touch and gesture sensitivity not only to computing devices and everyday objects, but also to the human body and liquids. I asked my friend DZL if he could design a version that worked on the Arduino platform.

With DZL’s permission, the solution has been packaged as an instructable that can be found here. I have made a simple graphing sketch that enables you to see the data and also do simple gesture recognition. Further, the instructable contains a step-by-step guide on how to build the circuit and upload the code. The only special components is a coil that can be made out of wire wrapped around a toilet paper roll.
