Floating Pyramid

Created at: 22/08/2010

Mysteriously the floating pyramid sits in the water, with no other expression than some light emanating from the seams holding it together.

Concept:
The floating pyramid is an interactive artwork. Mysteriously it is
floating out in the water with no other expression than some light
emanating from its cracks. As a lack of understanding some people
started throwing rock at it, which resulted in change of the light. As
the intentity of the fustration and rock-throwing grew towards the
pyramid it sometimes reaches a point where the light turns white and
smoke appears from inside. After a while the pyramid goes back to the
same mysterious expression with the subtle light.

Overview:
The wooden triangular float was already existing when it was decided
to build the floating pyramid. Pyramids has always been interesting
because of the simplicity and mysterious energy surrounding it. The
idea was to keep the simpleness and just add some light on the sides,
so the structure remains clean. It was the intention that the pyramid
should be open for improvements and ideas, so the side are made so
that it is easy to open and get inside the pyramid.

Technical:
The interactivity of the floating pyramid is that it is sensitive to
vibrations on its sides. This is sensed by piezomicrophones glued
directly of the metal sides. The pressure from all three side are
input to a microcontroller. When one of the inputs are above some
arbitrary threshold a fixed energy is added to the total energy. The
total energy decays linearly slowly. Depending on the total energy
level, the light will go into different modes. The lights along the
cracks are LEDs 12V – RGB. A PWM signal is sent to each color RGB.
